The History of Denim
Denim is always known as a structured, thick blue fabric, but it's not originally so. Denim was traditionally dyed blue to make blue jeans, but the term "jean" formerly referred to a lighter, cotton fabric unlike the denim we know so well today. The contemporary use of the word "jeans" comes from the French word for Genoa, Italy (Gênes), which is the birthplace of the first pair of denim trousers in 1873.
